Introduction to Sanyu Tang’s PLA Tea Bag Material

When Sanyu Tang first selected packaging materials, we prioritized both safety and environmental friendliness. As a result, we chose to use PLA (polylactic acid) mesh imported from Japan, commonly known as “corn fiber.” This material is heat-resistant up to over 100°C and is currently considered one of the most human- and eco-friendly materials used in tea bags. You can use it with confidence.

Although PLA is said to be biodegradable in natural soil, effective decomposition only occurs under specific humidity and pressure conditions and with proper recycling methods. In the future, if a more eco- and health-friendly tea bag material becomes available, Sanyu Tang will adopt it as a priority.

Nylon (PA), PET, and PLA (corn fiber) tea bags look similar, but here are two simple ways for tea lovers to tell them apart:

#Burn Test: Nylon PA and PET tea bags emit black smoke and charred black edges when burned. PLA corn fiber tea bags produce a white-like smoke and do not blacken at the edges.

#Tear Test: Nylon PA and PET tea bags are very hard to tear even with force. PLA corn fiber tea bags tear easily.
